Gargi Mandal

Gargi’s experiences in working with patients in a rural healthcare setting in India prompted her to study for a Bachelor’s in Biomedical Sciences so that she could help to create a difference in people’s lives.

She then pursued a Master’s in Neuroscience whilst working as a research assistant at the Stress, Psychiatry and Immunology lab, KCL, where she focused on understanding the role of inflammation and nutrition in depression.

At present, Gargi is a PhD student funded by the NIHR BRC Maudsley PhD programme at the Thuret lab where she is investigating the applicability of neurogenesis as a predictive biomarker for electroconvulsive therapy response in individuals with depression. Her research interests span mood disorders, cognition and developing better treatment strategies.

Beyond neuroscience, Gargi has worked in charities, libraries and as a freelance science writer, and is passionate about scientific outreach and learning more about the public policy landscape regarding mental health support.
